    The steering linkage used with most manual and power steering mechanisms typically includes a pitman arm, center link, idler arm, and two tie-rod assemblies. Pitman Arm The pitman arm transfers steering mechanism motion to the steering linkage (Figure 12-19). The pitman arm is splined to the steering mechanisms output shaft (pitman arm shaft). A large nut and lock washer secure the pitman arm to the output shaft. The outer end of the pitman arm normally uses a ball-and-socket joint to connect to the center link. Center Link The parallelogram steering linkage uses a center link, otherwise known as an intermediate rod, track rod, or relay rod, which is simply a steel bar that connects the steering arms (pitman arm, tie-rod ends, and idler arm) together (Figure 12-19). The turning action of the steering mechanism is transmitted to the center link through the pitman arm. Idler Arm The center link is hinged on the opposite end of the pitman arm by means of an idler arm (Figure 12-19). Ball sockets are used on both ends of the tie-rod assembly. The draglink connects the pitman arm to the spindle at a point near the spindle; the tie rod will connect the two steer wheels together. In a machine or mechanical device, it is the ratio of the output force to the input force applied to it. The relative length of the pitman arm and the steering arm determines the steering linkage ratio. When the effective lengths of the pitman arm and the steering arm are equal, the linkage has a ratio of 1:1. If the pitman arm is shorter or longer than the steering arm, the ratio is less than or more than 1:1. For example, the pitman arm is about twice as long as the steering arm. This means that for every degree the pitman arm swings, the wheels will pivot about 2 degrees. Worm and Sector In the worm and sector steering gear, the pitman arm shaft carries the sector gear that meshes with the worm gear on the steering gear shaft (Figure 12-21),. The steering wheel turns the worm on the lower end of the steering gear shaft, which rotates the sector and the pitman arm through the use of the shaft. Worm and Roller The worm and roller steering gear is quite similar to the worm and sector, except a roller is supported by ball or roller bearings within the sector mounted on the pitman arm shaft (Figure 12-22). As the steering wheel turns the worm, the roller turns with it, forcing the sector and pitman arm shaft to rotate. This action causes the lever and pitman arm shaft to rotate. The nut may operate the pitman arm directly through a lever or through a sector on the pitman arm shaft. Turning the worm gear moves the nut and forces the sector and pitman arm shaft to turn. Pressure from the oil pump is used to operate a piston and PITMAN ASSEMBLY assembly. When the control valve routes oil pressure into one end of the piston, the piston slides in its cylinders. Power steering hoses are high-pressure, hydraulic rubber hoses that connect the power steering pump and the integral gearbox or power cylinder. There are three major types of power steering systems used on modern passenger vehicles: integral piston or linkage type (Figure 12-28, View A), external cylinder or linkage type (Figure 12-28, View B), and rack and pinion (Figure 12-28, View C). The piston is pushed to the right in the cylinder to aid pitman shaft rotation. The piston is pushed to the left in the cylinder to aid pitman shaft rotation. External Cylinder (Linkage Type) The external cylinder power steering system has the power cylinder mounted to the frame and the center link. A basic power rack-and-pinion assembly consists of a power cylinder, power piston, hydraulic lines, and a control valve. Power cylinder (hydraulic cylinder formed around the rack). The power cylinder is precisely machined to accept the power piston. The power cylinder bolts to the vehicle frame, just like the rack of a manual unit. A rubber seal fits around the piston to prevent fluid from leaking from one side of the power cylinder to the other. Hydraulic lines (steel tubing that connects the control valve and power cylinder). Pump pressure is then allowed to flow through the control valve, the hydraulic line, and into the power cylinder.

    We decided to sand blast the brake and clutch pedal assemblies and powder coat them, along with the brackets and associated hardware. While we were at it, we disassembled the pitman arm/drag link assembly. It took little cleaning to realize that we were going to have to rebuilt the drag link and replace the pitman arm. We ordered a drag link rebuild kit and a new pitman arm. We received the new pitman arm, and unfortunately, the drag link rebuild kit was back ordered. So we cleaned up the drag link and wiped the new pitman arm clean so that we could powder coat them both. We wiped down the brake and clutch pedal assembly with solvent and got them ready for powder coating.Once we were sure everything would fit in the oven we simply powder coated the pieces while they were suspended (yes, powder gets on the oven rack but that doesn't hurt anything). Into the oven the coated pieces went. In about 30 minutes everything was cured and, after cooling off, ready for reassembly.The pedals used bronze bushings at their pivot points on the assembly's main connecting rod, so we cut out the old ones and gently (oh, so gently!) tapped in new ones. After that it was smooth sailing toward a reassembly. Assembly is simply putting the pedal brackets on the original shaft, and inserting a clevis pin and a cotter pin.The new pedals will receive fresh rubber foot pads (also on back order) and then the whole assembly will be wrapped in plastic and shelved until the project is ready for them.

There isn't a tremendous variation in jaw crushers, the primary differences is in their size. Should a piece of non-crushable material such as a steel loader tooth (sometimes called tramp iron) enter the jaw and be larger than the closed side setting it can't be crushed nor pass through the jaw. In this case, the toggle plate will crush and prevent further damage.

    Of the several applications to electro-pneumatic power to organ chests, the one that is used today by most organ builders is the pitman chest. Both gravity and wind in the stop channel above the pitman hold it in the lower position, and it blocks any exit of wind through the key channel below it. When wind in the stop channel is exhausted - - through the action of another magnet, wind presses the pitman up, leaving a clear passage from the pouch to the key channel. Because the pitman blocks the exit of wind from the pouch on the left, it does not move, and that pipe will not sound. The pitman on the right, however, has been raised, wind can exit the chamber below that pouch, and the pipe above it will sound. In actual pitman chests, the magnets, armature and housing are units made of metal and attached to the chest. The pitman itself ( F ) is a small metal cylinder with a leather pad attached to it.

    A sewing PITMAN ASSEMBLY treadle is a very basic and simple machine, beautifully so in it's way. All it really is is a framework to hold a drive wheel, a pedal and a pitman rod that connects them. When you work the pedal, the pitman rod drives the wheel through a crank or eccentric connection that's it. Of course, a belt is connected to the wheel and in turns drives the sewing machine, but for now all we are talking about is the treadle itself.For a really thorough job, I like to take the cabinet off. First, take the machine out. To do that, loosen or remove the belt, tilt the head back and loosen the set screws that attach the head to the hinge pins at the back. These screws are found under the machine. When they are loosened enough, you can lift the machine off of the hinge pins. Set the machine aside.You can unfasten the cabinet by crawling under it on the floor, but I usually lay a cloth or old shop blanket on the table top and tip the machine upside down on the table.A good beginning is to squirt a little Liquid Wrench on all the moving joints, nuts, bolts and screws. This will loosen things up and make disassembly easier. (Note: this does not apply to the connections of the wooden pitman rods don't put kerosene or Liquid Wrench on the wood.). NOTE: Both at the pedal and at the drive wheel, you may find actual roller ball bearings. Some of the better machines (White, Pfaff, others) used them. That's great. Don't let them throw you, just carefully study how they are fitted in before taking them out, and be sure to put them back in the same way after cleaning and re-lubricating them.Another caution if the pitman rod is wood, it will be very dry, which means brittle. When you're finished with this job, continue to rub oil on the pitman every few weeks for several months to restore moisture and strength to the wood.
